On Tuesday morning, the NATO executive director expressed strong admiration, suggesting a clear message from US President Donald Trump was evident.
President Trump was en route to the NATO summit in The Hague, Netherlands, where he is set to attend a royal dinner hosted by the Dutch king and spend the night. It seems he is optimistic about the summit, as nearly all NATO members are gearing up to raise their defense spending from a baseline of 2% to 5% in the coming years.
The idea of sharing defense responsibilities more equitably, with partners like Canada and various European nations taking on more of the load, has always been a goal for President Trump since his initial term. He supported the move towards a 2% benchmark back then and seems pleased with the upward revision now.
While aboard Air Force One, President Trump received a text message from NATO executive director Mark Latte, who mentioned the target of [five percent].
Latte’s message emphasized Trump’s role, stating, “Donald, you’ve positioned us at a crucial juncture for both America and Europe. You’ll accomplish what previous US presidents couldn’t for decades.”
Rutte, the Dutch Prime Minister, expressed a desire to address the situation in Iran during the NATO summit, although he acknowledged it’s not primarily an Alliance matter, deeming it a “diversion” from core issues at hand. He praised Trump’s management of the 12-day conflict, highlighting that Latte described Trump’s “decisive” actions against Iran as “extraordinary” and crucial for collective safety.
Until recently, Mark Latte was the long-serving prime minister of the Netherlands. His government faced collapse due to challenges in managing immigration, but he skillfully navigated his way into a leading position within NATO.
Factors influencing his decisions include the upcoming 2024 US presidential election, the potential re-election of President Trump, and the perception of European leaders as “whispers of Trump.”
