Reports indicate that a $60 million US fighter jet crashed into the Red Sea during a botched landing attempt, injuring two pilots and resulting in the loss of two expensive aircraft.
The F/A-18 Super Hornet encountered a “failed arrest” while landing on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, according to CNN.
As the pilots ejected from the warplane, they managed to survive and were later rescued by a helicopter. Fortunately, they sustained only minor injuries.
The Super Hornet remains underwater in the Red Sea, as per the latest information.
Just last Monday, another F/A-18 jet valued at $56 million fell off the USS Truman. This incident occurred as the carrier executed evasive maneuvers to avoid attacks from Houthi rebels.
The damaged jet was towed after being transported from the hangar during these defensive operations.
Interestingly, the pilot in this instance was unharmed.
USS Truman has reportedly been engaged in ongoing conflicts with Yemen’s Houthi rebels, with incidents persisting into the week, CNN noted.
Contradictorily, President Trump announced on the same day that the Houthis had surrendered and agreed to a ceasefire in the Red Sea.
According to reports, the White House’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, helped broker this agreement.
Since March, US forces have reportedly targeted over 800 sites in Yemen, resulting in significant losses for Houthi forces.
Earlier this year, the USS Truman collided with a merchant vessel off the coast of Egypt, leading to the removal of the ship’s commander shortly after.
