Dog Returned to US Navy Sailor After Unplanned Transfer
After an eight-month deployment, a US Navy sailor recently returned to the Middle East, only to discover that his cherished golden retriever, Archie, had been given away without his knowledge.
Paulo Silva’s homecoming was bittersweet. He quickly found out that his five-year-old canine companion was no longer with him. “I had no idea this had happened, and I never agreed to it. My dog was given away without my consent,” he shared on his social media.
Silva, who hails from Freehold, New Jersey but currently resides in Virginia, described Archie as his steadfast companion. The bond they shared was deep, as they had been through many ups and downs together. Before Silva’s deployment last October, Archie was taken to Toms River, New Jersey.
“This dog means the world to me. He’s my heart, part of my soul. We’ve faced some really tough times together,” he expressed.
Describing their connection as “irreplaceable,” Silva added, “I love this dog more than words can convey.” During his time on the USS Harry S. Truman, Silva was part of a lengthy operation in the Middle East, where he faced dangers, including attacks from Iran-backed groups.
Although Silva maintained daily contact with his family while deployed, he was never informed Archie was having trouble adjusting to his new surroundings. “They mentioned he wasn’t settling in well, but honestly, I’ve taken care of him throughout the years, and that wasn’t an issue before,” he said.
Upon his return on June 1, Silva took to social media, expressing his heartbreak and pleading for Archie’s return. “I’m not reaching out in anger, just in sorrow. Please consider giving my dog back to me,” he wrote. “As a veteran, this loss feels incredibly significant.”
With assistance from veteran organizations, local police, and social media, Silva began a campaign to locate his dog. “I’m thrilled to announce that Archie is back with me, safe and sound! I’m incredibly grateful to the family who cared for him,” he updated.
The sailor helped facilitate a connection between the family and the golden retriever breeder, who offered to donate a puppy to aid in Silva’s reunion with Archie.
“I am overwhelmed by the support you all have shown during this journey,” Silva expressed, proudly sharing a joyful photo of Archie.
In a recent update on social media, Silva urged his supporters to refrain from harassing the family who initially took Archie. “Let’s move forward with kindness. This is challenging for everyone, and it’s important we treat each other with respect,” he concluded. “I think we can all agree it’s time to close this chapter for everyone involved.”
