Doc Rivers Discusses Democratic Strategies Post-Trump Election

In light of President Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers has shared his thoughts on what Democrats must do to regain the White House. Rivers, a vocal critic of Trump, emphasized the need for a shift within the Democratic Party to unify their base.

“We really need to think differently if we want different results,” Rivers told MSNBC’s Nicole Wallace. “Staying in our comfort zone won’t work. Something has to change on the Democratic side, but honestly, I’m not sure what that looks like. The previous approach isn’t effective anymore; despite the popular vote, there are states that haven’t backed the Democrats in decades.”

Rivers recounted a conversation with Senator Cory Booker, pointing out the challenges of unity among Democrats. He noted that, unlike Republicans who often align regardless of past criticisms of Trump, Democrats struggle to agree on a unified front. “We represent a diverse group, not just white men, and it’s tough to get everyone on the same page,” he said. “But for real change to happen, we need to start somewhere.”

He also criticized the continuous focus on the idea that Trump “won.” In sports, he compared it to analyzing a lost game; one has to acknowledge what went wrong and pivot to a new strategy. Rivers stressed that one major problem is simply not enough voters are showing up.

“We really need to increase voter turnout. It’s about excitement and engagement,” he mentioned. “You have to start with yourself. If we want change, we need to motivate people to vote.”

Rivers expressed concern about the mindset within the black community regarding voting. He noted that while many black men supported Kamala Harris, it still wasn’t enough to sway the election. “There’s a sense of hopelessness,” he reflected. “Many feel that their votes don’t matter, and that’s troubling.”
