NBA Fans Protest Against ICE During Game
During a recent NBA game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors, an anti-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) message emerged from the crowd. Fans held up signs within the Target Center expressing their sentiments, stating “ICE on the move.” This demonstration was in response to two tragic fatalities involving federal agents in Minneapolis earlier this month, one occurring just the day before the game when Border Patrol agents fatally shot a local man.
In addition to the expressions inside the arena, protesters outside also voiced their opposition to ICE. The NBA had postponed the originally scheduled game in light of these events, which added a somber tone to the matchup.
Before tipoff, there was a moment of silence dedicated to Alex J. Preti, who was shot during a Department of Homeland Security operation. Reports indicated that he confronted officers, leading to the shooting. This incident followed another one involving a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer who shot Renee Nicole Good, claiming self-defense after Good allegedly attempted to block federal vehicles.
WNBA star Brianna Stewart had previously called for the abolition of ICE, highlighting the ongoing discussions surrounding the agency. The National Basketball Players Association responded by emphasizing the responsibility of NBA players to voice their opinions, particularly in the wake of repeated acts of violence related to federal enforcement in Minneapolis. They expressed solidarity with protesters advocating for justice, urging support for free speech.
The union conveyed its condolences to the families of both Alex Preti and Renee Good, underscoring a commitment to maintaining civil liberties and safety for all community members.
