NBA fines 76ers for injury reporting rules violation after Joel Embiid’s return from lengthy absence

The Philadelphia 76ers have been punished for what the NBA deemed to be a violation of injury regulations. The issue stems from the team’s treatment of superstar center Joel Embiid ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Sixers initially listed Embiid as an out player. He was then upgraded to questionable on the injury report in the afternoon, just hours before teeing off.

Under NBA rules, teams must list the status of players who may be affected by injury by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game, unless they are playing back-to-back games. The injury report will then be updated throughout his day.

Embiid finally played in Tuesday night’s game, finishing with 24 points. The NBA announced Friday that the Sixers were not in compliance and fined the team $100,000.

The fine comes just two days after the Sixers were fined $75,000 for failing to timely and accurately list Embiid on the injury report for a game against the defending champion Denver Nuggets in January. It was imposed in just over a month. Embiid later suffered a torn meniscus and required surgery.

And in late March, 76ers first-year head coach Nick Nurse and guard Kelly Oubre Jr. were each fined $50,000 for their actions toward officials during a game.

The league said Nurse “aggressively” pursued and “verbally” abused game officials during a March 27 game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Oubre’s actions during the heated confrontation were described as “despicable”, including gestures directed at the referee.
