NBA referee Scott Foster injured in the face during playoff game

The NBA playoff game on Thursday night saw a tough moment for long-time referee Scott Foster. During the intense Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Minnesota Timberwolves, Foster took a hard hit to the face.

This all unfolded when Foster officiated a jump ball between Lu Dort and Julius Randle in the first quarter. As Dort returned to the play, he accidentally struck Foster in the face.

After the incident, Foster dashed over to the scorer’s table, his hand pressed beneath his nose. It was clear he was struggling to stay on the court. He received assistance and a towel to help stem the bleeding from his nose.

Foster, who has been in the NBA since the 1994-95 season, is often dubbed an “extender” among fans—likely due to a reputation of games turning in favor of the team that’s trailing when he’s officiating.

During the game, he was alongside notable players like Chris Paul, who had a tough outing himself, shooting just 3 for 17. It’s worth noting that Paul was courtside when the injury to Foster occurred.

The Thunder managed to secure a strong 2-0 series lead, largely thanks to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored 38 points just a day after being named NBA MVP. Oklahoma City won the game, 118-103.

Gilgeous-Alexander shared his feelings post-game, saying, “I was really emotional about everything, but I felt a bit tired at the start. It’s a special moment, and I’m happy to win, allowing me to enjoy the last few days.”

He wasn’t alone in his contributions; Jalen Williams added 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Chet Holmgren chipped in 22 points for the Thunder.

The Timberwolves struggled but made a push in the final period, closing within 10 points. However, Oklahoma City was able to maintain control. Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 32 points, though it took him 26 shots to get there. Other efforts came from Jaden McDaniels with 22 points and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who scored 17.

Looking ahead, the Timberwolves now head home, having a playoff record of 4-1, with their next game scheduled for Saturday in Minneapolis.
