NBC Analyst Says Biden Campaign’s Biggest ‘Worry’ Is It May Be Impossible To Convince Voters He’s Competent

NBC national politics analyst John Heilemann said Friday that President Joe Biden’s campaign’s biggest concern is that its efforts to convince some voters that the president is competent may be futile.

Biden’s cognitive abilities have been repeatedly cited as a possible issue, with NBC political analyst Elise Jordan saying Friday that voters are saying they’re watching the presidential debates “to see if” Biden “can do the job” of being president. Heileman said on “Morning Joe” that the Biden campaign’s biggest concern, based on an interview he had with Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon, is that there may not be a solution to persuade voters who have “deep concerns” about the president. “I think what they’re worried about, Kati, is the information environment is the way it is,” Heileman told MSNBC contributor Kati Kaye. “So I asked, [O’Malley Dillon] I often see surrogates go on TV and say, “I met Joe Biden recently, and he’s a great guy,” and I say, “Look, most of these people have met Joe Biden once or twice. You’ve spent more time with him over the last three years than anybody in the White House. For those of you who say Joe Biden is not fit for the job, please give me a clear reason to believe he is.”

“She told a great story… it’s emotional, it’s powerful, it’s vivid, but it’s a four- or five-minute story,” he added. “And in this information environment… the voters they need to appeal to are people who don’t listen to five-minute stories. They’re never going to see Joe Biden that way. All they’re going to see are deep fakes, cheap fakes, images that aren’t fake, quick images that leave a certain impression. And appealing to people in this environment, appealing to someone in the environment of the information ecosystem that we live in right now, is really hard.”

Former President Barack Obama on Saturday guide Biden fell off the stage during a campaign event and appeared to freeze. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday sought to downplay concerns that Biden appeared to be wandering around at the recent G7 summit, calling it a “cheap fake” orchestrated by Republicans in response to a video that recently circulated.

“And I think they’re wrestling with a small minority of voters who have very significant and stubborn concerns about Biden that are hard to reach,” the analyst said. “How do you connect with those people? How do you motivate those people? There’s no answer. There’s no secret silver bullet to that question. And, Kati, I think that’s what they’re worried about more than anything else.”

On Tuesday, back-to-back listeners called into the popular hip-hop radio show “The Breakfast Club” to attack the president and Democrats who claim he’s OK.

The first caller referred to Biden as “Crazy Joe,” while the second said, “Democrats want to keep telling us not to believe their lying eyes, as if no one can see Joe Biden.”

“He’s 81 years old, God bless him, but that doesn’t mean you’re competent and the only person who can run this country. We’re seeing what’s going on,” the second caller continued. “You might say it’s not happening, but we’re seeing it. We’re experiencing it. I’m actually seeing people having to put their groceries back in the register. People are barely able to pay their electric bills right now.”
