NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd said Tuesday that Hunter Biden’s conviction is a “huge blow” to former President Trump.
Speaking on the “MSNBC Report” after Biden was found guilty of federal charges of illegally possessing a firearm, Todd said the real political impact of the verdict is that it’s a blow to Trump because it proves there are no double standards at the Justice Department.
“I think this really damages the Trump campaign’s ability to ignore their own convictions,” an NBC analyst told network anchor Ana Cabrera.

Former President Trump has long accused the Biden Justice Department of targeting him and instigating investigations and criminal trials that are plaguing him ahead of the 2024 election, and more recently said the department conspired with New York prosecutors to convict him on 34 counts of falsifying business records.
Todd argued Tuesday that the Justice Department’s decision to prosecute the president’s own son for federal crimes undermines Trump’s argument that the department will only go after Biden’s opponents.
“But politically, this is a big blow to Trump. If you’re just thinking about the political impact, I think he’s desperately trying to weaponize this and it’s a long-standing Republican talking point,” he said.
Todd went on to assert that “there has never been any evidence to support their claims,” adding that not only is there a lack of evidence to support Trump’s accusations, Biden’s ruling is evidence that “refutes the entirety of the claims made by people like Jim Jordan and James Comer.”

He accused Republican lawmakers of “trying to invent an excuse for loyalty to President Trump and political resolve that doesn’t exist.”
The host continued, “Whether Trump still uses various grievances to attack the justice system is not an issue, since he is fighting the justice system himself. But if he’s hoping this will persuade the middle class, I don’t think his arguments about the justice system are convincing after this.”
Caroline Leavitt, national spokesperson for the Trump campaign, responded to Hunter Biden’s sentence in a statement, saying, “This trial is nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the Biden crime family, who extorted tens of millions of dollars from China, Russia and Ukraine. The villainous Joe Biden’s reign of the Biden family criminal empire will come to an end on November 5th. Biden will never again sell his access to government for personal gain.”
