NC State University dismisses LGBTQ center assistant director for boasting about avoiding DEI ban on video

N.C. State University Fires LGBTQ Center Assistant Director

The recent firing of Jay Edwards, the former deputy director of the LGBTQ Pride Center at North Carolina State University, has raised eyebrows. His dismissal follows an undercover investigation in which he reportedly admitted to finding ways to work around the university’s restrictions related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

In the investigation conducted by Accuracy in Media, Edwards conveyed that while the university may have rolled back its DEI policies, there was still a need to be “careful” about supporting LGBTQ members. He claimed, “We’re used to finding ways around them.” However, critics argue that this video was heavily edited and misrepresented his comments.

Edwards also mentioned, “We can still do what we want and do these events and programs,” indicating that caution, rather than abandonment of support, was key. His remarks reflected a sentiment familiar to marginalized groups: the need to navigate systemic challenges.

A spokesperson for the university confirmed Edwards’ termination, stating that he, along with others in the video, was not authorized to make statements on behalf of the institution. They emphasized that the individuals involved had no role in policy or compliance matters.

In the aftermath of Edwards’ dismissal, some students started a petition advocating for the return of individuals affected by the decision, but it only garnered about 700 signatures, a modest number considering the student body exceeds 39,000.

According to AIM, Edwards’ comments flouted the recent repeal of DEI standards by the UNC System Board of Governors, leading to similar actions against two other employees in the system. Meanwhile, Edwards managed to raise over $12,600 through a GoFundMe campaign, as he expressed mixed feelings about the negativity he encountered online.

He shared, “As I scroll through social media and see articles, videos, and hateful comments, an indescribable feeling comes to me.” The funds he collected are intended to cover various living expenses.
