NCAA gives Tennessee's Arion Carter a two-game suspension due to $427 flight issue

Tennessee Linebacker Faces Suspension

Things aren’t looking too good for Tennessee’s defense; they’ve just lost a key player. Linebacker Arion Carter is set to miss two games following a suspension levied by the NCAA. This stems from an incident where he accepted a $427 ticket from his agent to an NFL pre-draft facility, which, unfortunately, goes against NCAA regulations.

This incident has been classified as a Level III violation, which the NCAA describes as a basic misconduct breach. It’s not the most lenient of penalties, either, and a two-game sit-out is quite significant for such an issue. Tennessee’s head coach, Josh Heupel, shared that Carter is no longer associated with an agent and had settled his airfare balance as of January.

Initially, Carter had declared for the NFL Draft after struggling with a foot injury late in 2025 but ultimately decided to withdraw when the injury required surgery.

Heupel has come to Carter’s defense, stating that he disagrees with the NCAA’s decision regarding the suspension. He expressed admiration for Carter’s contributions over the years, saying on social media: “Arion Carter represents everything that is right about college athletics and has dedicated all four years to the University of Tennessee.” He further emphasized Carter’s admirable character and leadership, which have been invaluable to the program.

He continued, “We disagree with the NCAA’s decision to suspend Arion for multiple games this fall. He made a commendable choice for his health and well-being. He’s set to graduate from the University of Tennessee in Public Health with Dean’s List honors this August. Our team is really rooting for AC and his family, and we’re excited to have him back on the field for training camp next week.”

As it stands, Carter will sit out the first two games of the season against Furman and Georgia Tech but is expected to return for the matchup on September 19 against Kennesaw State. In his collegiate career, he has racked up 161 tackles, with a personal best of 76 tackles last season, alongside 1.5 sacks.
