Controversy Surrounds Teachers’ Union Email

The National Education Association (NEA), the largest teachers’ union in the U.S., reportedly sent out an email to its around 3 million members that contained a controversial map showing Israel completely erased and labelled as Palestine.

This email, which went out on Friday, included resources for teaching about Indigenous peoples, but also shared a map from the North American Values Association that many found troubling. It seems to have sparked significant backlash, as noted by the Jewish News Syndicate.

Interestingly, the email also pointed to materials that appeared to defend Hamas following their October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the kidnapping of about 250 to Palestine.

One regional director expressed concern, stating that it was alarming for such a significant organization to use anti-Semitic imagery to justify violence rather than focus on uplifting communities. He labeled this an unacceptable failure, especially for an organization that shapes young minds.

The email encouraged educators to share certain “relevant sources” with their students. The NEA spokesperson later attributed the problematic content on their website to a third party.

The spokesperson acknowledged the issue, mentioning that these external resources had been used by various organizations over the years but did not meet the NEA’s standards. They insisted that the union has always opposed anti-Semitism.

After identifying the offensive content, they conducted an investigation and promptly removed it from their site. The spokesperson emphasized their condemnation of the content, asserting that they were working to find resources that align with their values while raising concerns with the hosting organization.

A regional director stated that the quiet removal of content lacked transparency and accountability, calling for a full explanation and a genuine apology from the union.

The Anti-Defamation League, which the NEA cut ties with earlier in the summer, also criticized the union for the oversight, arguing that it represents a significant denial of both history and current events. They emphasized that educators should stick to factual teaching rather than altering narratives.

This controversy coincided with the much-anticipated ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, part of a peace agreement mediated by President Trump.
