On Friday, a crowd attending a nearby car show broke into Station 76 near San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport around 4:30 a.m.

Gas station owner Sam Mardai said about 80 to 100 people entered the store and took what items they could.

“The shelves were ripped apart, all the food items were ripped up, trampled or destroyed,” Marday told the outlet.

Surveillance cameras from the incident showed looters taking food from shelves, boxes, baskets and even a television.

The rioters were reportedly upset that they were not allowed inside the store, which was only offering counter service at night – as is normal for a 24-hour establishment.

Approximately $25,000 in cash was stolen from the store’s ATM and cash register, but the thieves were unable to remove the safe.

The widespread looting, which lasted about 40 minutes, threatened two store employees, Mardaye said. KTVU.

“This is the toughest thing you can ever go through in your life… especially for someone who has put in the sweat and tears every day,” the frustrated owner told the outlet. “You’ve worked yourself up for the last 10 months and now you’re back to square one.”

When he called Oakland Police, an operator told him the crime could be reported online and that it was classified as priority 2 because there was no suspect.

Officers were dispatched to the store nine hours after the robbery began, and it was only upgraded to priority level 1 after video of the extensive looting was shared with police. KTVU report.

Oakland has seen a recent spike in crime, forcing several restaurant chains to close locations in the area. The gas station is located near an In-N-Out that closed its only location in the area due to out-of-control crime.
