Nearly half oppose possible US military action in Iran: Survey

45 percent against potential US strikes in Iran: Poll

Public Opinion on Potential US Strike in Iran

A recent SNAP survey reveals that less than half of adults in the United States oppose a possible military strike in Iran. Specifically, 45% expressed their disapproval of “US troops launching attacks against Iran regarding its nuclear program.” Interestingly, about 25% of participants felt uncertain about their stance.

This survey comes in the context of President Trump’s administration discussing the potential for intervention in the ongoing conflict. Tensions escalated last week when Israel carried out attacks targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and missile sites, resulting in the deaths of several key Iranian figures and scientists, which prompted nearly a week of retaliatory strikes.

Iran supports Hamas, an extremist group engaged in conflict with Israel in the Gaza Strip since October 2023.

While Trump has largely avoided addressing direct attacks on Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, he hasn’t dismissed the idea of intervening on Israel’s behalf. Earlier this week, signs emerged that the US military is preparing for possible involvement, as the Pentagon ordered additional resources to the region.

On Wednesday, when pressed about the possibility of a direct attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Trump was evasive. “You really think I’m going to answer that? Do we attack Iran’s nuclear components?” he replied, adding, “Maybe I will, maybe I won’t. No one knows what I’m planning. Iran is facing a lot of challenges, and they want to negotiate. I wonder why they didn’t negotiate with me before all this chaos.”

Regarding perceptions of the threat from Iran’s nuclear program, the SNAP poll indicated that 22% of respondents view it as an “immediate and serious threat.” Meanwhile, 48% deemed it a “slightly serious threat,” 23% categorized it as a “minor threat,” and 7% claimed it posed “no threat” at all.

The majority of those surveyed appeared to be well-informed about the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran. Approximately 70% reported being aware of a significant conflict, while about 30% expressed that they had heard either little or nothing about it.

The survey was conducted on June 18th, involving 1,008 participants, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
