Nearly three-quarters of Americans say Biden shouldn’t be running, doesn’t have cognitive health to serve as president: Post-debate poll

A new poll conducted after the first presidential debate finds that nearly three-quarters of Americans believe President Joe Biden should not run in 2024 and that he does not have the cognitive ability to serve in the White House.

be CBS News/YouGov Poll Thursday’s presidential debate, held June 28-29, 2024 among 1,130 registered voters, turned out badly for President Biden.

Biden, who at 81 is the oldest president in U.S. history, struggled in the first presidential debate and Americans took notice.

An overwhelming majority of American voters, 72%, say Biden does not have the mental and cognitive health necessary to serve as president, up from 65% in the same CBS poll conducted June 9.

Biden, whose cognitive abilities are already being questioned, will be 86 by the time he is re-elected to serve another four-year term.

After the disastrous debate, 72% of registered voters said Biden should not run for president in 2024, up 63% from a survey conducted in February. 46% of Democrats also said Biden should not be the party’s presidential nominee in 2024, up from 36% in February.

Reasons Americans say Biden shouldn’t run for president in 2024 include:

  • 86% answered their age.
  • 71% answered about decisions he will make while in office.
  • 66% cited his performance as president.
  • Fifty-nine percent said he was capable of running an effective election campaign.

As for the actual debate, only 18% said Biden “inspired credibility,” compared to 44% for former President Donald Trump. Only 21% of voters felt Biden’s debate performance “presented his ideas clearly,” compared to 47% for Trump. When asked which candidate seemed “presidential,” 46% said Trump did, while only 28% said Biden did.

The only bright spot about the debate was that 40% of voters believed Biden was telling the truth, compared with 32% for Trump.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

Even left-leaning media outlets like CNN acknowledged that Biden’s debate performance was dismal. The New York Times editorial board declared that Biden should withdraw from the 2024 presidential race following his terrible performance in the presidential debates.
