Nebraska GOP fails to pass ‘winner-take-all’ election overhaul

An attempt to make Nebraska’s elections a “winner-take-all” format failed this week.

State Sen. Julie Slama on Wednesday attached the election overhaul bill to an unrelated bill, LB1300, with the goal of making changes before the Legislature adjourns on April 18.

It fell short of the required 23 votes and ultimately failed with a vote of 8 to 36.

Nebraska is one of only two states in the United States that does not have a winner-take-all system. Others are in Maine.

Both states allocate Electoral College votes based on districts, so Democrats could pick up additional delegates from mostly red states.

Changes to winner-take-all will almost certainly occur. benefit the republican party As has happened in the past, by allowing Nebraska’s red majority to gain the upper hand and preventing the blue minority from winning a single delegate.

Slama criticized Republicans’ failure to pass the amendment despite their majority in Congress, saying it showed a lack of “fortitude.”

“This sums it up nicely,” Slama said. “The ‘stop the filibuster’ majority doesn’t have the fortitude to turn Nebraska into a winner-take-all state in an election year. That’s wild.”

State Sen. Lauren Lippincott has proposed the first winner-take-all bill, LB764, but it is not expected to pass before the legislative session adjourns.

“My staff and I are doing everything we can to explore options to get us to the finish line,” Lippincott said, according to local broadcaster WOWT. “But the harsh reality of a two-day period has its limits.”

Lippincott’s bill has enthusiastic support from state governors and former President Donald Trump.

“I am a strong supporter of Sen. [Loren] Lippincott’s winner-take-all bill (LB 764) was like that from the beginning. “This will bring Nebraska in line with the other 48 states, better reflect our founding intent, and ensure Nebraska has a unified voice in presidential elections,” Gov.
