Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen approved restrictions on gender transition treatment for people under 19, as more states enact regulations regarding “gender affirmation” procedures for minors.
“Nebraska’s children are our future. They deserve the opportunity to grow and reach their full God-given potential,” Pillen said in a statement last week. “As a nation, we must protect our children from making irreversible and regrettable decisions, decisions that they may not fully understand the consequences of.”

Last week, Pillen, a Republican. The bill would require transgender people under the age of 19 seeking non-surgical pharmaceutical gender reassignment treatment to clear several hurdles before receiving treatment. This includes 40 hours of treatment before being allowed to prescribe puberty blockers or hormones.
If such a prescription is issued, the minor must wait seven days before being able to collect the prescription. When prescribed puberty blockers or hormones, minors must undergo one hour of therapy every three months to assess their mental health.
“I’m glad the process is over,” Republican state Sen. Kathleen Kaus told the Nebraska Examiner. “I hope it helps the kids.”

But supporters of broader access to so-called “gender affirmation” procedures and prescriptions believe the law will be harmful to children who identify as transgender. The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska released a statement signed by the governor, saying the Nebraska Legislature “categorically ignored serious concerns raised by affected youth, their families, and medical and mental health providers.” I have decided to do so.”

The new law comes as more conservative states enact laws that severely restrict both surgical and non-surgical transgender procedures on minors. And states such as Idaho, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Florida make it a felony to give a minor a prescription for gender reassignment or perform a surgical procedure such as gender reassignment on a minor. This took it one step further.
Meanwhile, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, New York, Vermont, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Maryland, Illinois and Massachusetts.
