Nebraska Takes Action Against Medicaid Funding for Abortion Services

Nebraska Governor Issues Executive Order on Abortion Providers

Nebraska’s Governor Jim Pillen, a Republican, announced on Thursday the state’s ban on abortion providers accessing its Medicaid system. This decision comes in light of a Supreme Court ruling from June that allows South Carolina to deny Medicaid funds to Parenting Plans, with the court stating these plans cannot take legal action under civil rights law. Following this ruling, various states have sought to remove abortion providers from their Medicaid programs.

Pillen stated, “Not a single penny of Nebraska’s tax dollars will go to family planning clinics,” emphasizing the administration’s stance. Attorney General Mike Hilgers added that this order ensures taxpayer money isn’t allocated to Medicaid clinics not sanctioned by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), effectively blocking any taxpayer funding for abortions within the state.

The executive order shifts taxpayer funds towards “high-quality health care providers” that do not offer abortion services. Officials brought attention to reports of abortion clinics operating under “abhorrent conditions,” raising concerns about the safety and health of women and babies.

“The stories regarding these facilities are honestly shocking—something you wouldn’t expect to see anywhere,” Hilgers expressed. “It certainly jeopardizes women’s health and that of babies.”

Dr. Steve Corsi, CEO of the Department of Human Services, mentioned DHHS would monitor compliance to prevent any reclassification of abortion-related procedures to bypass the ban.

In response, Planned Parenthood labeled the action as “a propaganda stunt,” designed, according to Ruth Richardson, president of PP North Central, to mislead Nebraskans about their abortion options.

Conversely, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America commended Pillen for his leadership, with president Marjorie Dannenfelser declaring that no taxpayer money should support an abortion industry that harms both children and women. Dannenfelser concluded that Nebraska values both the lives of babies and the well-being of women, viewing this decision as a significant advancement in fostering a culture of life.
