Nedra Talley Ross, Last Member of The Ronettes, Dies at 80
Nedra Talley Ross, the last surviving member of the famed 1960s girl group The Ronettes, passed away on Sunday at the age of 80. Her daughter, Nedra K. Ross, confirmed the news via an emotional social media post.
Nedra co-founded the iconic group in 1959 with her cousins Ronnie Spector and Estelle Bennett. Together, they created a lasting legacy that shaped the “Wall of Sound” era and significantly impacted pop music.
“At around 8:30 this morning, our mother Nedra Talley Ross went home to be with the Lord. She was safe in her own bed with family close by, knowing she was loved. Thank you, Lord.”
The band’s official Facebook account also shared a heartfelt message: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce Nedra Talley Ross’ passing. She was a light to those who knew and loved her.”
“As a founding member of The Ronettes, alongside her dear cousins Ronnie and Estelle, Nedra’s voice and spirit played a crucial role in shaping a sound that transformed music. Her legacy will endure.”
“Rest peacefully, dear Nedra. Thank you for the magic.”
The Ronettes found fame in 1963 after joining forces with legendary producer Phil Spector, the mastermind behind the ‘Wall of Sound’ style. Their first single with Spector, “Be My Baby,” quickly topped the charts, followed by other hits like “Baby I Love You” and “Walking in the Rain.” They went on to share the stage with major acts such as the Rolling Stones and even opened for the Beatles during their final U.S. tour in 1966.
They contributed memorable tracks to “A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector,” which remain popular during the holiday season, with their voices instantly recognizable.
The group disbanded in 1967 but were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, just two years before Estelle Bennett’s death. During their acceptance speech, Ross reflected on the dreams they had as teens.
“We had a dream, but with a dream, you need support. My mom knocked on doors when no one wanted to sign three young girls who they thought might change their minds later. I’m grateful for that — God knows what you’ve done.”
She also expressed gratitude to Jesus for her life, especially after undergoing open-heart surgery, thanking her husband, Scott Ross, and their four children.
“Show business can be great, but it can also be tough,” she remarked. “Thankfully, we had a family that provided a stable foundation in a crazy world. It was a fun time. I thank God.”
