Netanyahu Acknowledges Armenian Genocide in Interview

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the occurrence of the Armenian genocide during an interview with Patrick Bett David on Tuesday.

The Armenian genocide, which saw approximately 1.5 million Armenians killed by the Ottoman Turks, occurred during World War I.

Modern historians regard this tragic event as one of the first genocides of the 20th century, spanning from 1915 to 1916. Turkey has consistently challenged the assertion that the Ottomans sought to systematically exterminate the Armenian population.

The Ottoman Empire’s ongoing suspicion of Armenians led to the forced relocation of communities from battle fronts against Russia. Sadly, numerous Armenians perished in concentration camps during this period, with many more suffering in various camps.

Many Armenians believe that the Ottomans intended their elimination, viewing them as obstacles to the ambitions of the Young Turks, who envisioned a powerful Turkish empire extending from the Caucasus to China.

Historically, Israel has refrained from officially recognizing the Armenian genocide, concerned that doing so might jeopardize its relationship with Turkey, a crucial ally in the Islamic world. However, recent tensions, particularly Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s firm stance supporting Palestinian claims, have shifted this dynamic.

On Tuesday, Netanyahu recognized Armenian genocide officials in his remarks during the podcast.
