Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video statement on Tuesday calling on the United States to end its suspension of arms and ammunition supplies to Israel.
The Biden administration confirmed it was refraining from deploying large precision bombs to Israel in May in protest at Israel’s decision to invade the southern Gaza town of Rafah and engage the last Hamas battalions.
As a result, Israel was forced to send troops there rather than bombing buildings that might contain bombs.
The White House said it was concerned about Palestinian civilian casualties, but one million civilians have been withdrawn from Rafah.
Biden was thought to have made concessions on the arms issue after the Israeli operation was successful, reportedly destroying half of the Hamas terrorist forces in Rafah and sending many civilians to safety.
There were unconfirmed reports on Monday that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had assured Netanyahu last week that arms shipments would resume in full. But Netanyahu’s speech suggests that the shipments remain suspended, which is why he has appealed publicly and directly to the White House.
“We are very grateful to the people of Israel for their support,” Netanyahu said in a video posted to Twitter on Monday.
During Secretary Blinken’s recent visit to Israel, we had a frank discussion, and I said I deeply appreciate the support the United States has given to Israel since the start of the war.
But I also said something else: I said it was inconceivable that the Administration had withheld arms and ammunition from Israel over the past few months.
America’s closest ally, Israel, is fighting for survival against Iran and other common enemies.
Secretary Blinken has assured me that the administration is working around the clock to remove these obstacles. I sincerely hope that’s true, as it should be.
During World War II, Churchill told America, “Give us the tools and we will [sic] It’s a job.’ And I say if I give you the tools the job will be done much faster.
(Churchill actually Already used The same goes for the word “end.”
The need for large precision bombs, not just artillery, has become especially acute as Israel shifts its focus to the growing threat from Iran-backed Hezbollah, which continues to fire missiles at Israel from southern Lebanon.
The attack has rendered Israel’s northern border uninhabitable. Israel will almost certainly strike back, but it will need weapons to reach an enemy whose tunnels appear to be far more sophisticated than Hamas’ in the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu is scheduled to address a special joint session of Parliament on July 24, the first time he has done so as a fourth foreign leader, and some Democratic lawmakers are already making plans to disrupt, boycott or protest the speech.
