Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with former President Donald Trump on Friday at his private residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, according to two announcements posted by Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social.
The meeting marks a warming of relations between Netanyahu and Trump, who for years has resented Netanyahu for congratulating President Joe Biden on his 2020 election victory. The two worked well together during Trump’s time in the White House, with Trump calling Netanyahu by the nickname “Bibi” in one of his posts.
At the same time, Netanyahu’s office said he would meet with President Biden at the White House at 1 pm EDT on Thursday. The meeting was postponed from Tuesday after Biden was diagnosed with COVID-19.
Breitbart News reported Monday that Netanyahu is also expected to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris, who is considered the leading Democratic presidential nominee following Biden’s withdrawal on Sunday, but a date for the meeting has not yet been set.
Harris declined to chair a special joint session of Parliament where Netanyahu will speak at 2 p.m. EDT on Wednesday. She cited scheduling conflicts, but a more likely reason may be that she fears the anti-Israel left in her party and that Netanyahu will devote part of his speech to criticizing her administration’s policies toward Israel.
Netanyahu’s meeting with Trump came after Netanyahu made major scheduling adjustments because the Israeli leader did not want to travel on the Jewish Sabbath, meaning Friday’s meeting would mean he would have to stay in the U.S. longer than planned and would not be able to leave until Saturday evening.
