Netanyahu to Skip Holocaust Memorial in Poland Due to ICC Warrant

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will reportedly not attend the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on International Holocaust Remembrance Day next month, fearing that Poland will honor his arrest warrant.

The warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. The ICC has no jurisdiction over Israel, and its prosecutor, Karim Khan, who is facing allegations of sexual misconduct, has refused to notify Israel before taking action.

The Times of Israel quoted Polish media sources as saying: reported Friday:

The massive event is scheduled for January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and will be attended by dozens of leaders and heads of state, including Britain's King Charles.

According to Polish news outlet Rzeczpospolita, Israeli authorities have not contacted the Polish side about participating in the event, and authorities in Warsaw say the reason is Netanyahu over possible war crimes in the Gaza Strip. We believe this is related to Poland's position on complying with the ICC's arrest warrant against its prime minister. war.

Relations between Israel and Poland have been strained in recent years, with Poland pushing back against claims that it was complicit in the Holocaust. Nazi Germany operated many extermination camps there, and some Poles continued to murder Jews even after the war ended. But Poland put up the fiercest resistance to the Nazi occupation, and more Poles than anyone else are honored at Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial for saving Jews.

Then-President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the ICC to prevent it from investigating the United States and its allies at the behest of anti-Western nations. President Joe Biden reversed course, allowing the ICC to target Israel and, in some cases, investigate American leaders and soldiers.
