The Nets signed two big contracts on the eve of the 2024 NBA Draft, giving them control over their future once again heading into the draft.
First, Brooklyn has Mikal Bridges in his Villanova They signed with fellow city blockers the New York Knicks in exchange for five first-round picks, a pick swap and a second-round pick, and in a separate deal they would get back a big-money 2026 first-round pick from the Houston Rockets.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said in the news:
The Knicks pay a high price to acquire one of the league’s most coveted trade assets, while the Nets get a huge return to replenish their assets and embark on a rebuild with tons of cap space and future draft picks.

Anthony Puccio of Net Daily noted that the Bridges trade was historic not only because of the assets Brooklyn acquired, but also because it was the first such trade between the two teams since they began playing in the same city.
This is the first time the Nets and Knicks have completed a trade since 1983.
The Knicks traded a second-round draft pick to the Nets to acquire Len Elmore.

As Woj noted, the biggest takeaway from this game of musical chairs is that Brooklyn now has a greater degree of control over its own future. By getting their 2026 pick back from the Rockets, the Nets acquired the 2026 pick originally released in the James Harden trade, though Harden has famously been traded twice since. The Nets are free to play and don’t have to worry about sending a potentially valuable pick to the Rockets.
One only needs to look at tomorrow’s draft for an example of the potential impact of this: Houston has the No. 3 pick in this one because, after the Nets failed to perform well enough around Bridges and inevitably gave up a lottery pick as part of the aftermath of the ongoing Harden trade, they sold one of the NBA’s most valuable role players in exchange for more picks, giving them back the ability to reap the benefits of underachievement.
The price the Rockets paid for the rights was steep — a more complicated multi-team pick swap and the Suns’ first-round pick could be money if the team continues its expensive implosion — but the end result is likely a win for Brooklyn, who could acquire Bridges from the Knicks without worrying about sending a valuable pick to Houston as part of a long rebuild.
For the Knicks, that’s a steep price tag that will reduce their revenue significantly. Asset War chestBut adding Bridges to the core trio of Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo as Villanova’s final Infinity Stone could be worthwhile. Julius Randle’s contract is still available for trade, so OG Anunobi’s future becomes increasingly uncertain — Even Mr. Woj New York still wants to keep him. — It remains to be seen how solid this Knicks foundation will be.
Still, it’s hard not to imagine a devastatingly dangerous team if Bridges — the notorious NBA iron man — can endure Tivoli’s notorious playing time, given how well they’ve performed. Without it Despite his many injuries, he is the perfect 3-and-D wing for the 2024 NBA playoffs. With a little luck and some smarter moves, this team could make it to the NBA Finals.

What about Houston? The goals are still in flux and, as always for the Rockets, seem to be in constant chaos. They’re trying to get Kevin Durant. Yes, for real.
The full ramifications of this massive, complicated deal will continue to unfold, but for now, one thing is clear besides Brooklyn regaining control of its own destiny: If these are the fireworks teams can set off on draft eve, next week’s draft and free-agency frenzy is sure to be explosive.
