Nets guard Dennis Schroder is taking up another sport in his free time.
The veteran point man from Germany will make $13 million in salary cap space next season and is in the final year of his current contract before moving on to professional soccer.
The 30-year-old made his professional football debut on Wednesday with FC Germania Breckenstedt in Germany’s sixth division.
Schröder played 62 minutes but unfortunately lost 1–5 to SC Göttingen 05.
“It wasn’t the result I wanted in my first official football match, but I’m grateful to my brother-in-law. Daniel Io “Thank you for making this happen,” he wrote on Instagram.
Schröder and Germania Breckenstedt are due to return to action on June 6 against VfL Warenholz.
Prior to last season, Schroder famously led Germany to its first-ever FIBA World Cup gold medal in September.
Schroder was ranked the eighth most likely to win before the tournament, but he led Germany to victory over Serbia in the final and was named the tournament MVP.

Schroeder and the German team have secured an automatic berth at the Summer Olympics, which begin in July.
The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 19.1 points and 6.1 assists per game during the World Cup.
Last season, he was traded from the Raptors to the Nets and averaged 14.6 points and 6.0 assists for Brooklyn.
