Minnesota Governor’s Controversial Comments on ICE

During his law school graduation last May, Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz made a remark comparing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to “President Trump’s modern-day Gestapo,” stating they were “picking up people off the streets.” This wording raises the question of how swiftly government agencies can shift towards oppressive tactics.

Interestingly, the national broadcast networks didn’t find this comment particularly controversial or newsworthy. Independent fact-checkers appeared indifferent as well. Comparing President Donald Trump to Hitler seems to be a regular part of Democratic rhetoric, but there seems to be a double-standard when it comes to law enforcement perceptions, especially when Democrats aren’t in control.

It’s becoming evident that many Democrats, including Walz, are not just against mass deportations; they seem to be opposed to any form of deportation altogether. There’s a clear reluctance to cooperate with ICE, and instead, there’s a pushback against the agency.

Currently, ICE is facing significant hostility, which has even led to violence against them. For instance, in September, an illegal immigrant ran over an ICE officer in Chicago, dragging him to his death—yet there was no outcry from the major networks. It’s a troubling trend when incidents like these don’t garner sympathy or attention.

Last December, in St. Paul, an illegal immigrant allegedly assaulted ICE officers. Again, the networks chose not to highlight this situation. The tragic death of someone like Renee Nicole Good, who threatened an ICE officer with her vehicle, illustrates a complex issue. Activists may feel empowered to protest law enforcement actions, but any interference with police work crosses a legal boundary.

It’s almost predictable how the networks would react to such deaths—there would be intense coverage and emotional responses. However, the same cannot be said for women who have been victims of illegal immigration-related violence. It’s questionable whether the media considers these cases equally significant, given their selective focus on ICE actions versus illegal immigrant crimes.

For example, the networks largely ignored cases like that of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungarai, as well as the murder of Maryland mother Rachel Morin. Reports indicate that the coverage dedicated to the trial of an immigrant killer was vastly overshadowed by the airtime given to less critical stories, reflecting a possible bias in what is deemed newsworthy.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s call for ICE to “get out” of the city echoes a broader sentiment among Democrats. He responded to questions about growing tensions by stating that community unity is essential and that their efforts are aimed at safeguarding immigrant rights. In contrast, some politicians and activists depict ICE as perpetuating crime and chaos.

Democrats often frame illegal immigrants as “our neighbors” and describe anti-deportation efforts as “keeping people safe.” Frey’s statement reflected a common narrative that demonizes ICE while portraying those resisting the agency as protectors. It all feels a bit contradictory when viewed through an Orwellian lens.

Nevertheless, labeling activists merely as concerned citizens doesn’t capture the full picture. For instance, an NBC report characterized Renee Good as just a mother without acknowledging her activism against ICE. When the Trump administration refers to Good as radicalized, it is often met with skepticism from local officials.

When networks claim there’s “no evidence” for assertions, it often indicates a lack of inquiry into the matter. Reports suggest that Good is part of an anti-ICE movement, actively engaging in social justice education.

Moreover, it seems these networks heavily criticize Trump and ICE without remorse. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel used his platform to mockingly label Trump as dangerous while addressing incidents involving ICE. The backlash is not just reserved for policies but also targets individuals associated with these controversial issues.

In various discussions, the tensions prompted by events involving ICE have stirred strong emotions and actions from communities—often without critique from the networks, which tend to focus on fueling outrage against certain policies. This is the same atmosphere that breeds protests and, sometimes, violence against policies deemed harmful.
