News Outlets to Sue Trump After White House Ban

CNN, MS NOW, and Politico announced on Monday their intention to take legal action against President Donald Trump and unnamed senior officials from his administration. This comes after the outlets were denied access to the White House, allegedly as retribution for what Trump claims are their “fake news” reports.

The lawsuit argues that this restriction represents viewpoint discrimination, violating the First Amendment. It marks the first formal response to the president’s actions regarding media access.

Reports indicate that on Saturday, reporters from these three organizations were prevented from entering the White House, which followed Trump’s public expression of discontent with their coverage.

While Trump did not specify the exact reason for the ban, he remarked that “media outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report fiction and lies when they’re covering the President of the United States.” He emphasized a desire for fair and unbiased coverage.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared his decision: “I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MS NOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico… as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ fake news!”

Moreover, Trump stated that he may exclude additional media outlets he categorizes as “Fake News” from the White House grounds.

Previously, Trump has criticized MS NOW reporter Jake Traylor, calling him “one of the worst in the business,” while expressing similar disdain for Politico and its coverage.

According to AP, two reporters, Betsy Klein from CNN and Akayla Gardner from MS NOW, confirmed that they had been turned away from the White House—finding their press credentials deactivated upon arrival. Shortly thereafter, Politico’s Cheyenne Haslett reported being similarly denied access and having her badge taken away.

The AP article highlighted that the three news organizations had hinted at legal measures in response to their treatment.

In a joint statement shared on X, they noted, “Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting. Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”

The president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, Jacqui Heinrich, urged the Trump administration to reverse its decision, warning that allowing such exclusion could be a precedent for further media discrimination. She stressed that the public deserves to have media that can independently scrutinize those in power, regardless of government approval.
