Following Democrats’ extraordinary decision to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris, major television networks should carve out time for Republican rebuttals at the Democratic National Convention later this month.
Typically, political parties use their conventions to defend their candidates and attack their opponents. During the first few nights in Milwaukee, much of the Republican energy was focused on Biden’s record in office. They largely ignored Harris, and rightly so. The attacks on Biden were Too He effectively withdrew after the Republican Convention, which essentially meant Trump won, but now must face an entirely new election.
When Democrats hold their convention in Chicago later this month, their target will remain the same: Donald Trump, whom they have demonized and prosecuted for nearly a decade. But they will also have the opportunity to present Harris in the most favorable light possible, without giving Republicans a chance to present their opposition. That gives Democrats an unfair advantage as early voting begins this fall.
“The networks should give Republicans at least one night to refute the Democrats’ claims about Harris. The truth about Harris is that she has accomplished nothing beyond being elected or appointed to public office and has embraced the most extreme policies and most destructive elements in American politics. Americans need to know that, or at least have the opportunity to understand the arguments against her, before making their voting decisions.”
Three hours of airtime would be enough. One hour would be enough. If the networks won’t provide it, the Trump campaign, or a pro-Trump super PAC, should buy it. Otherwise the public will never know the truth.
