Neuralink’s first brain implant chip patient said he was assured no monkeys died during trials despite some suffering, dying

Nolan Arbaugh, a 29-year-old man who was paralyzed from the neck down in a diving accident, has made headlines in recent weeks as the first human to suffer from Elon Musk syndrome. Neuralink An implant chip implanted in the brain.

The company has reportedly reached a major milestone in developing digital devices that aid human cognition, but there are serious concerns about the safety of the technology. One of the most important concerns is how this technology will be used on animals during testing.

Neuralink is facing backlash following reports that monkeys in various testing stages of its brain-implant chips are dying or medically requiring the death penalty.Benzinga report “The primates were part of an experiment designed to assess the ability of Neuralink’s brain chip to control technology through thought alone.”

Ethical questions have been raised regarding the development of brain chips, as monkeys are said to have a high mortality rate.

Arbaugh appears to have been aware of the negative press Neuralink received before ultimately agreeing to proceed with the port. “I read a lot of negative articles about it before the surgery, about all the scary things about it. [the company was] “When you drill into a monkey, and how bad it was, the monkey likes to take out his implant and rub it on the ground and stuff,” he said.

There have also been reports of monkeys having their skulls drilled and suffering other forms of pain during the company’s testing. Benzinga said there was one report of a monkey who experienced vomiting, retching, and panting before a brain hemorrhage was discovered.

Despite all the reports coming out about Neuralink’s testing practices, they refuse to admit that their testing practices are unethical. When the monkeys had to be euthanized, the company said it was due to aggression among the monkeys and had nothing to do with the brain implant chip itself.

To quell the flames of criticism, Musk tweeted to X in September 2023: “No monkey has ever died because of Neuralink implants. Firstly, the initial implants were designed to minimize the risk to healthy monkeys (sic) (already near death)” has been selected.”

Arbaugh’s experience with brain implant chips looks promising, but Fortune reported That said, there are good reasons for people to remain skeptical. One of the most obvious facts about Arbaugh’s experience with Neuralink is that the company has “precise control over everything you see and hear,” adding that “Neuralink has 10,000 peer-reviewed research studies. “We don’t always announce it. This is unusual in the medical industry, even for experts.” It is a privately owned company. ”

The only approval the company received was permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to proceed with its first human clinical trial.
