U.S. Forces Continue Strikes Against Iran
On what marks the eighth consecutive night of military action, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) carried out further strikes aimed at the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This comes after a tragic event resulted in the deaths of two U.S. service members and is part of a broader strategy to reduce Iranian influence in the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM released a statement on Saturday detailing that their forces targeted various military positions, including IRGC assets, during a substantial five-hour-long assault.
“The strikes are intended to diminish Iran’s capacity to jeopardize commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and swiftly retaliate against the IRGC, which recently launched attacks on U.S. personnel in Jordan,” the command noted in a post.
According to CENTCOM, the service members were engaged in defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone assaults when they lost their lives. A few others were injured, four of whom were hospitalized briefly before being discharged. However, one service member is still unaccounted for.
The strikes commenced at 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday and wrapped up around 11:30 p.m. American forces reportedly hit several key Iranian military installations—coastal surveillance, air defense systems, as well as storage sites for missiles and drones—as a direct response to attacks the previous day.
“U.S. military assets also targeted IRGC forces responsible for the attacks against our service members in Jordan on July 17,” CENTCOM added. “There are over 50,000 U.S. personnel deployed across the region, remaining vigilant and prepared.”
President Trump, who authorized Saturday’s strikes, expressed sorrow over the loss of the troops in various media interviews, reiterating the conflict’s ultimate aim.
“It’s a very sad thing. We hate to see it happen. It’s for the service of our country… we will never allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapon,” he stated during a phone call.
Many members of Congress, spanning both parties, offered condolences to the families of the fallen.
“I’m praying for the loved ones of these brave fallen American heroes, for the swift recovery of those injured, and for the safe return of the missing service member. May God bless our brave men and women in uniform,” commented Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.
“I’m heartbroken to learn of the deaths of 2 U.S. service members in Jordan. I’m praying for their families, and all those who were injured or are still missing,” remarked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Yet some lawmakers have expressed criticism regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran.
“Trump initiated a senseless war, lacking any proper exit strategy. But now, our brave servicemen and women are paying the price,” said U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego.
Conversely, others have called for direct action.
“My prayers are with our troops who were killed and those still unaccounted for. President Trump is justified in targeting those responsible. Further attacks will defend Americans and undermine Iran’s hold over the Strait,” tweeted U.S. Senator Tom Cotton.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that the sacrifices made by the troops only strengthen the U.S. resolve.
Reports indicate that 16 U.S. service members have lost their lives since the start of this conflict with Iran.
