Arizona congressman-elect Yasamine Ansari (Democratic), while also mentioning the immigration issue as President-elect Trump prepares to crack down on deportations, said that he thought he had won in the battleground state, but that Vice President Harris won. I told him why it wasn't there.
Ansari said she appeared on “The Hill” with NewsNation's Chris Stilwald on Sunday, where she and new Democratic House members discussed the recent election victory, but the party's crushing defeat. Ta.
“One thing we all agree on is that there is an oversimplification when it comes to messaging,” Ansari said.
As Democrats try to figure out what went wrong in the election, many point out that they failed to reach voters on the issues that actually mattered to them.
“We haven't done a good enough job of reminding people about the issues that actually matter to them: Why can't they afford a place to call home? Why can't they afford to buy groceries? Why? We need to focus on these issues and clearly explain the policies we have. Democrats have policies that actually try to help people and make their lives easier. Because there is,” Ansari said.
She didn't just focus on one issue as she campaigned across Arizona. Her problems were specific to each region and community she was in.
As President Trump prepares to implement his immigration plan after taking office, states that border Mexico and have large immigrant populations, such as Arizona, are taking precautions.
“What I think needs to be separated is the issue of border security and harm to immigrant communities,” she says. “Arizona Democrats completely agree that we need to secure our borders.”
“What I oppose are insane, racist, and harmful policies like mass deportations that affect neighborhoods like mine in Phoenix, Arizona,” Ansari continued.
