Revelations About Biden Family’s Handling of Beau’s Cancer
A new book suggests that former President Joe Biden and his late son, Beau, who was Delaware’s attorney general, kept details about Beau’s cancer diagnosis hidden from the public. The book, titled “The Original Crime: President Biden’s Decline, Concealment, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” claims the family misled the media regarding Beau’s health. This non-fiction work, authored by journalists Jake Tapper of CNN and Alex Thompson of Axios, was released on Tuesday.
This news comes just after Biden announced he had a “aggressive form” of prostate cancer, although his office later clarified he had never been diagnosed with that condition.
The book argues that such secrecy reflects a troubling tendency to avoid transparency about health issues—even when those affected are public figures. It recounts the summer of 2013, when Beau collapsed during a family vacation and subsequently underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor. By fall, he had started to limit public appearances and media engagements.
Internally, in September, discussions were held about how much to disclose regarding Beau’s condition, but ultimately, nothing was communicated. By November, Beau had claimed to a local reporter that he received a “clean health certificate.”
A few months later, in February 2014, a neurologist confirmed that “small lesions” had been successfully removed from Beau’s brain.
Despite undergoing treatment across the nation, Beau continued in his role as Delaware’s attorney general. The book notes he entered the hospital under the name George Lincoln. It also mentions that Beau’s wife, Hallie, expressed confusion about why his health issues were being kept private, even as it was suggested the public might have provided support if they had known more. However, both Joe and Beau were against sharing any details, according to the authors.
Additionally, the book states that during his vice presidency, Biden’s staff was instructed to mislead the media about his whereabouts when he was actually accompanying Beau to treatment in Houston.
The narrative suggests that recognizing Beau’s illness would have made it undeniably real, adding a layer of complexity to Biden’s public persona.
Beau Biden passed away in May 2015 at the age of 46 from a glioblastoma brain tumor. The book asserts that the decision to conceal these health struggles is tied to the upcoming 2024 election and concerns regarding the former president’s mental clarity.
This book is one of several set for release in 2024, which delve into Biden’s cognitive decline.
