She really ought to have dropped the anchor.
A young driver accidentally sent her car flying onto a pier, almost mirroring a scene straight out of a movie, and just managed to steer away from plunging into Long Island Sound.
This incident, captured on camera, involved a Silver 2008 Jeep and occurred on Mother’s Day in the parking lot at Brookhaven Town Marina in Port Jefferson around 6:42 PM, as reported.
The 17-year-old driver lost the front bumper when she inadvertently accelerated the SUV onto the bulkhead, crashing through the guardrail. Reportedly, the driver’s side tires dangled over the water, while the back of the vehicle stayed tilted.
The collision also caused damage to the floating dock, as the headlights of the Jeep struck the platform first.
Brookhaven Town Manager Dan Panico described the driver as “inexperienced,” noting that the situation turned out “lucky” compared to other potentially tragic outcomes.
“Every day I wake up and wonder what the day will bring,” he shared on Facebook, reflecting on the shocking moment.
Local firefighters successfully extracted the driver, who fortunately sustained only minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Authorities announced that vehicles docked with several ropes since Sunday evening would be removed by heavy-duty tow trucks.
