With Bible sales rising across the United States, a new documentary aims to clear up misconceptions fueled by books and movies like Da Vinci Code. The film helps both Christians and non-Christians grasp the reliability of the New Testament.
The documentary, The Oracle of God: New Testament Stories, delves into the formation of the New Testament, outlining how the Gospels and letters from the Apostles were documented, disseminated, and preserved. It features reconstructions, archaeological findings, and insights from experts.
This is the second installment in a series, following a previous film that explored the Old Testament. It’s produced by CBN Films.
Craig A. Evans, a scholar specializing in the New Testament, points out that this documentary addresses a significant need. He expressed concern that many are not well-versed in the Bible—this includes people inside and outside the church.
“There’s a lot of misinformation out there,” Evans shared, reflecting on how the Da Vinci Code led to doubts about the origins of the Gospels, suggesting they were written later and questioning their authenticity.
Evans believes that Da Vinci Code, first a hit novel in 2003 and later a major film, has contributed to widespread misunderstandings regarding the New Testament. He insists, however, that the New Testament should be seen as a trustworthy account of God’s word.
Evans feels that the documentary effectively addresses common arguments against the reliability of the oral tradition—the period before the Gospels were penned.
