Teen Accused of Killing Family Claims Extremist Upbringing
A 15-year-old boy, charged with the tragic killing of nearly his entire family, is said to have been raised under an isolated and extremist ideology, according to his attorneys. They argue this environment shaped his actions and led to the horrific incident.
Recent court filings reveal that Mark and Sarah Hewmiston allegedly instilled years of religious extremism and paranoia about government issues in their son and his siblings. On a grim October day, prosecutors allege he shot his parents, along with his three siblings—a 13-year-old brother and a 7-year-old sister—leaving only his 11-year-old sister alive, who managed to escape injury by playing dead.
Community members and acquaintances have noted a consistent pattern: the children were kept away from the outside world and lacked social interactions with peers. Reports indicate that the household environment was not only abusive but strictly controlled by extreme beliefs.
The defendants argue that the boy and his deceased brother were homeschooled within this “extremist survivorist” framework. The defense claims he developed intense paranoia, particularly around government and health officials, especially regarding the Covid-19 vaccine, contributing to his isolated lifestyle.
Furthermore, it’s reported that the teenager had access to firearms, including the handgun used in the tragic events. Insight from nearly 100 interviews with family members and witnesses has painted a complex picture of the boy, describing him as “kind” and “respectful,” despite the tragedy he has been involved in.
A relative indicated that there had been complaints of abuse in the home, suggesting a troubling environment. This alleged abuse took on a more horrific reality last October when the boy methodically shot his family in their Washington mansion.
The shooting began around 5 a.m., and after the gunfire, the boy returned to check for signs of life. Only his younger sister survived, managing to escape and reach a neighbor’s home. In a surprising twist, the shooter called 911, claiming that his 13-year-old brother had taken their family’s lives and had possibly been influenced by inappropriate materials the night before.
Authorities quickly apprehended him, and he now faces several serious charges, including multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder.
