Cincinnati Property Tax Relief Initiative

Cincinnati – Assistance may be on the way for families and homeowners burdened by unpaid property taxes, potentially arriving in the form of a letter in your mailbox.

Mayor Aftab Pureval, alongside Hamilton County Treasurer Jill Schiller and local housing advocates, introduced a new initiative early Monday morning: the Property Tax Relief Program.

“This is our way of getting support to those who need it most, and quickly,” expressed Pureval.

The program is being touted as a “one-time chance to address late property taxes” for qualifying homeowners. In the coming days and weeks, around 250 homeowners who meet the criteria will receive notifications by mail.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Residing in Cincinnati
  • Living in a single-family or two-family home that the owner occupies
  • The home should have a market value of less than $100,000
  • A late property tax balance under $10,000 as of July 2025

The city has allocated $250,000 from its 2026-2027 budget to support this program, according to the port authority.

Officials from both the Port and the Treasurer’s office emphasized that only those receiving the letter will be eligible for assistance.

A new initiative aims to assist over 200 homeowners in Cincinnati who are struggling with property tax debts.

“We’re using available resources to support our most vulnerable residents,” commented Schiller.

Once homeowners receive their letters, they are advised to contact Working In Neighborhoods (WIN), complete an application, and engage in the organization’s complimentary financial counseling services.

On Monday, the treasurer’s office mailed out 170 letters, with an additional 80 letters expected later this week.

I spoke with Sister Barbara Bush, the Executive Director at WIN, who mentioned that over 200 homeowners are becoming more aware of the financial coaching available through the debt relief program.

“We work on creating budgets that suit them and help identify various avenues for financial assistance, enabling them to resolve their tax issues and eliminate delinquent taxes,” she explained.

A letter sent to local homeowners instructs them to reach out to WIN at (513) 541-4109, extension 138, by September 15th.

A representative from the Treasurer’s office noted that this is currently the only program focused on property tax and debt relief.
