New Injection Shows Promise in Reducing Visceral Fat
Early trials of a new experimental injection known as CBL-514 have indicated its potential to reduce harmful visceral fat. This type of fat is located deep in the abdomen and can surround vital organs, ultimately impacting metabolism and increasing insulin resistance. These factors play a significant role in developing type 2 diabetes.
Research released earlier this year by the American Heart Association revealed that visceral fat is more closely linked to heart failure risks than traditional measurements like body mass index (BMI).
The recent trials, led by Dr. W. Timothy Garvey from the University of Alabama at Birmingham along with Yu-Fang Ling from Caliway Biopharmaceuticals in Taiwan, aimed to determine whether CBL-514 could effectively reduce these visceral fat deposits. Previous tests had already demonstrated the drug’s ability to decrease subcutaneous fat, which is the fat located just beneath the skin.
In these phase 2 trials, participants received CBL-514 injections in their lower abdomen every three weeks for a duration of up to 12 weeks, with doses as high as 600 milligrams. MRI scans showed a reduction in visceral fat in those who received the drug, while those given a placebo saw an increase in their fat levels.
Interestingly, the number of injections each participant received was adjusted based on how thick their abdominal fat layer was. As the volume of fat decreased, so did the need for injections.
The CBL-514 injection encourages a process called apoptosis, leading to the self-destruction of fat cells without harming nearby cells. Four weeks after the final injection, those treated with CBL-514 saw an average 12.01% reduction in fat volume, while the placebo group experienced a 5.68% increase, according to reports.
Dr. Garvey pointed out that while the cosmetic improvement of a flatter stomach might attract patients, it’s the broader health benefits, such as reduced body weight, improved blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and decreased visceral fat, that are really crucial.
Unlike common cosmetic procedures like liposuction, which can’t effectively eliminate visceral fat, this injection targets it directly, potentially lowering associated health risks.
