A New Jersey school board has canceled a local high school’s “Nuttin’ Butts” basketball tournament after a promotional video featuring women in thongs twerking was released.
The video was reportedly created to promote an upcoming event at West Side High School in Newark, New Jersey. New York Post.
In a promotional video, organizers revealed that there would be a prize for the tournament’s winners: “The best team out of the four will receive $10,000,” the video stated.
The event was sponsored by Big Fendi, the music manager who discovered rapper and singer Nicki Minaj.
But the sexual performance caught on video shocked the local school board, which quickly moved to stop the event from taking place in the Westside High School gym.
“I’m appalled that such a video could be associated with that school or any of our schools,” board member Daniel Gonzalez said at Tuesday’s board meeting.
Board co-vice chair Allison James Frison agreed, calling it “disgusting.”
“We want to know who signed in, who opened the door and how many minors were in that location,” said board member Crystal Williams, calling for an investigation.
Superintendent Roger Leon stressed that the event was not sanctioned by the school and that Fendi had simply arranged to use the gym for his own competition. “Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken,” Leon said.
Fendi was also promoting the tournament, scheduled for July 21, as the “NBA Buddies Basketball Tournament NJ.”
The school board took action after many parents expressed outrage when the promotional video was posted on social media.
Fendi eventually apologized to “the entire city of Newark” on its Instagram account.
“Things got a little crazy and out of control,” Fendi said in an Instagram video. “You guys had no idea what these girls were going to wear and I take full responsibility for that.”
