New Jersey legislator goes to court after reportedly attacking agents at ICE center

New Jersey Rep. McQuiver Faces Court for Assault Charges

New Jersey Representative Ramonica McQuiver is set to appear in court on Wednesday following allegations of assaulting two federal agents at an immigration detention center in Newark earlier this month. McQuiver was reportedly carrying out a supervision duty along with two other Congress members on May 9.

At 11 a.m., she will stand before a US Magistrate Judge in New Jersey to be informed of her rights and charges, after which the judge will determine her bail arrangement. McQuiver described the accusations against her as “ridiculous,” insisting that she was merely conducting her oversight responsibilities. “It’s just absurd. We were there to collaborate with colleagues; this kind of thing has happened before,” she explained, emphasizing her duty as a congressperson.

Border enforcement official Tom Homan remarked that McQuiver “breaks the law” and should face consequences for her actions involving ICE. McQuiver, reflecting on the events, expressed frustration over the situation, noting the tension caused by local officials during what should have been a routine visit. “They had every chance to avoid this and yet chose conflict. If I’m charged for fulfilling my duties, then what does that say about our direction as leaders?”

According to charging documents, body camera footage captured the incident showing McQuiver and fellow legislators allegedly forcing their way into the ICE facility. Prosecutors claim that one federal officer involved is a Homeland Security investigator while the other is an ICE agent. The Justice Department’s accusations include McQuiver allegedly “slamming her forearm into the body of an HSI agent, attempting to restrain the agent” and pushing another officer.

In a statement, McQuiver characterized the charges as politically motivated. “Earlier this month, I paired with a colleague to assess the treatment of ICE detainees in my district,” she stated. “We were simply fulfilling our legal responsibilities and aimed for a peaceful visit. However, ICE agents escalated the situation unnecessarily by arresting Mayor Baraka.” According to reports, Baraka attempted to accompany McQuiver and other representatives into the facility when tensions flared after federal officials denied him entry.

Witnesses confirmed that the arrest of the mayor led to heightened conflict during the delegation’s visit, which was intended to be a straightforward oversight. Prosecutors further allege that McQuiver contributed to the chaos by blocking agents from restraining Baraka and creating a “human shield,” disregarding multiple warnings.
