New Jersey Man Sentenced Again After Trump Pardon

A man from New Jersey, Eliyahu “Eli” Weinstein, found himself back in jail on fraud charges recently—this marks his third such incarceration. President Trump had pardoned him toward the end of his first term.

Weinstein, who is 51 years old and also known as Mike Koenig, received a 37-year prison sentence Friday in Trenton, New Jersey. Prosecutors allege he promised to facilitate deals for much-needed supplies like medical equipment and baby formula for Ukraine, managing to defraud investors of around $35 million. It’s hard to believe, but that’s what the indictment claims.

U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp presided over the case and ruled that Weinstein must now pay over $44 million in restitution, which sounds like a hefty price to cover. He had been found guilty in March for complicity in defrauding multiple investors.

Interestingly, his previous sentences were set for 24 years in total, but Trump had commuted them on January 19, 2021. It’s quite a turnaround, given that Weinstein was to only serve eight years in prison and an additional three on supervised release, according to the conditions set by Trump.

Following his release, prosecutors assert that Weinstein resumed his fraudulent activities almost immediately. In alarming messages to his co-conspirators, he was quoted saying things like he “deceived and lied” to safeguard their interests, which is pretty telling about his mindset.

In another rather shocking admission, he mentioned enjoying lying to investors and that he slept for 12 hours after one of his schemes. It’s a peculiar thing to feel pride in, isn’t it?

Weinstein’s earlier crimes included a real estate pyramid scheme, and he continued to pull off cons even while out on pretrial release. Trump’s pardon was one of 143 granted during his last days in office, adding on to a controversial list that also included Steve Bannon and others involved in election-related offenses.

The case certainly brings up questions about accountability—especially given the extensive clemency granted. What do you think? Is it fair for a person like Weinstein to have another chance, only to revert to old habits?
