New Jersey Elects Progressive Congresswoman

New Jersey’s political landscape shifted a bit on Thursday night.

Analilia Mejia, the new congresswoman, mirrors the style of “Squad” member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, even favoring similar ruby lipstick. She also champions left-leaning policies aligned with influential figures like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and AOC.

Mejia, the daughter of immigrants, secured a special election win to fill the remainder of Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill’s term in the House of Representatives.

This marks her potential re-entry into a contest against Joe Hathaway, the Republican she defeated last November, aiming to represent the 11th District for a full two-year term. This is her fourth election within just nine months.

At 48, Mejia was a delegate for Sanders during the 2016 Democratic primary and played a role in his 2020 campaign before joining the Biden administration’s Labor Department.

Her platform aligns with progressive ideals, advocating for the elimination of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Medicare for All, tuition-free public universities, student loan forgiveness, a $25 minimum wage, and higher taxes for the wealthy.

Describing herself as a “brassy new member,” Mejia likely aligns with the progressive faction in the House.

“Let’s not forget,” she told supporters, “we’ll have to do this again in eight weeks.”

Having clinched endorsements from Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders, Mejia emerged victorious against 11 opponents in the Democratic special primary back in February. She now sets her sights on the June 2 primary to secure a nomination for the midterm elections on November 3.

Hathaway, the former mayor of Randolph Township, expressed readiness to face Mejia once more in November, aiming to ensure all voices are heard.

Throughout the campaign, Hathaway labeled Mejia a socialist and, controversially, an anti-Semite, especially after her comments regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza during its conflict with Hamas.

In March, she stated, “I believe [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu is a war criminal,” but clarified, “I don’t extend that condemnation towards Israelis or Jews.”

In a debate against Hathaway, she promised to defend Jewish voters’ rights and educate against anti-Semitism as a congressional member.

Democrats interpret Mejia’s victory as an indication that voters are pushing back against President Trump’s policies and expressing frustration over rising living costs. The affluent 11th Congressional District, which encompasses parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties, historically leaned Republican but has shifted towards the Democratic sphere since Trump’s entry into politics.

“My opponent might discuss affordability,” Mejia remarked during the debate, “but, in reality, Republicans like him and Trump have contributed to economic instability.”

Mejia, who grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and is the daughter of an undocumented mother from Colombia and a father from the Dominican Republic, has personal connections to immigration issues and ICE.

“ICE is a corrupt institution perpetuating daily human rights violations,” Mejia asserted. “We can’t fix it with oversight; we must abolish ICE and hold accountable those involved in crimes against humanity. We need to act now to prevent further tragedies.”
