Introducing the Portal Lounge at MSP
Picture this: you’ve navigated security, but the plane isn’t quite ready for you. You find yourself meandering through the airport terminal, searching for a cozy spot to sit, an accessible outlet, or perhaps some food that doesn’t break the bank.
Enter the Portal Lounge at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, which aims to change that waiting game. Launched on May 28th, this high-tech lounge, conceptualized by the founders of Gameway, offers a more engaging way to kill time before your flight.
The space fuses games, food, music, and even robotic bartenders into a lively environment for travelers eager to make the most of their downtime.
A Space Built for Connectivity
Portal Lounge, developed by entrepreneurs Jordan and Emma Walbridge, is the next step in transforming airport experiences. Their gaming venture has already popped up in nine U.S. airports and is set to expand to eleven by year-end. Unlike traditional lounges that thrive on quiet exclusivity, this one leans towards creating a vibrant, interactive setting.
Spanning 3,800 square feet, it accommodates around 114 guests and showcases a portal-like entrance and Art Deco décor, creating an exciting vibe. With its cinematic lighting and custom furniture, the atmosphere is designed to encourage social interaction.
Turn Waiting into Playing
One of the standout features is its gaming stations. Travelers can choose from 17 dedicated spots loaded with Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and gaming PCs, offering around 30 different titles ranging from casual to competitive gaming. Interestingly, adults in their 30s make up the largest gaming demographic in the U.S., and this group often seeks enhanced experiences while traveling.
Emma noted that the success of Gameway highlighted how much more interactive settings can captivate travelers waiting at airports. “Travelers want to relax during delays or long layovers,” she remarked. “They’re looking for a more engaging alternative to common waiting rooms.”
Robotic Bartenders in Action
The lounge will soon also feature a robot bartender—the first of its kind in a U.S. airport lounge. This robotic innovation, developed in Italy, aims to blend traditional bar services with visual entertainment, serving up both cocktails and mocktails.
However, the aim isn’t to replace the bar scene entirely. Instead, it’s to add a unique touch that creates memorable experiences. It illustrates how airport waiting is evolving into something more interactive and fun.
Embracing Technology for a Seamless Experience
“We wanted to enhance, not overwhelm, the traveler experience,” Jordan explained. The lounge incorporates technology in various aspects, from check-in to entertainment, designed to feel seamless from the moment guests arrive.
Culinary Offerings and Local Touches
The lounge also steps up the airport food game, featuring chef-curated small plates and local cocktails. One highlight is the “Rag Free,” a unique Minnesota-style margarita infused with Honeycrisp apple and citrus. Another is the Prince’s Lemonade, honoring the famous musician from the state, creating a local connection that resonates with travelers.
A Shift in Airport Lounges
Traditionally, airport lounges were about quietness, Wi-Fi, and snacks. For many, that sufficed. But today, with crowded gates and the potential for boredom, travelers seek a more enriching experience. Portal Lounge aims to deliver just that by operating as an independent shared space accessible via Priority Pass and certain credit cards, with walk-in access available for around $70.
Though some may hesitate at the price, for those facing long layovers or delays, the lounge’s offerings might become worth it. The combination of games, food, music, and innovative drinks could redefine airport waiting.
The Right Place for Portal Lounge
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is a prime location for this new concept, projected to welcome around 36 million passengers by 2025. Many ticketed travelers arrive early, looking for ways to utilize that time effectively, and Portal Lounge is tailored for those who find themselves with a spare 90 minutes or so.
Your Experience Matters
In short, Portal Lounges may just elevate the way travelers view airport downtime. If you find yourself at MSP, you’ll have options for games, dining, music, and even that robotic bartender before your flight.
Emma hopes travelers will leave thinking their airport time enriched their journey. “We aim for a more immersive, engaging experience,” she said. It’s certainly intriguing, especially during long waits or with restless travel companions around. Just remember, while having fun, keep an eye on your boarding time so you’re not sprinting to your gate at the last minute.
The Evolution of Airport Experiences
The Portal Lounge exemplifies the future direction of airport travel. Travelers are looking for more than just a place to sit; they want comfort and entertainment to make waiting worthwhile. The innovative technology, along with gaming stations and a festive atmosphere, might not appeal to every traveler—they may prefer a quiet coffee instead. But for those who value making the most out of their time while waiting, the Portal Lounge could very well feel like a savvy investment.
