A 27-year-old man convicted of killing a New Mexico State Trooper during a traffic stop last year will spend the rest of his life in prison, according to New Mexico State Police (NMSP).
Dominic De La O was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole, the agency announced in a news release Wednesday.
On November 8, a jury found De La O guilty of first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, aggravated flight from a law enforcement officer, resisting or evading a police officer, and trespassing.
He is responsible for the July 2023 death of a 41-year-old Alamogordo police officer. Anthony Ferguson.

The incident began on July 15, 2023, at approximately 2:18 a.m., when an Alamogordo police officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop for driving without lights on Delao and 9th Streets near Puerto Rico.
De La O fled from authorities, crashed into a utility pole, got out of his car with a sawed-off shotgun and began running.
During the foot chase, Delao turned around and shot Ferguson in the face. He died of his injuries on July 16 at University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.

Delao continued to flee to a nearby house where he was shot in the leg by police and arrested there.

Weisler said state police “continue to work with all law enforcement partners to ensure that those who harm our officers are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
Another New Mexico man was sentenced to six years in prison in connection with an incident in which he provided De La Haut with a modified shotgun.
