A New Mexico State Police trooper was shot and killed Friday morning near the city of Tucumcari, but police say the suspect remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

New Mexico State Police announced in a post on X just after 10:30 a.m. Friday that the trooper was shot near mile marker 320 on Interstate 40.

The details of the death are unclear, and police say they will reveal more details in the future.

The police post was accompanied by a grainy image of the suspect, who police said was wearing a brown hoodie and jacket at the time.

A second photo of the suspect was released by New Mexico State Police around 1:20 p.m. Police said the suspect was last seen walking on the I-40 frontage road at milepost 304 between Montoya and Newkirk.

The Key County Sun reported that the shooting occurred around 5:30 a.m. this morning, citing Police Chief Patty Lopez.

Police closed one westbound lane of Interstate 40 near the scene this morning, and a rest area near Newkirk was also closed, the Key County Sun reported.

The incident is the first death of a state trooper since 2021, when Trooper Darian Jarrott was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 10 near Deming, the Key County Sun reported. .
