Google Unveils New Pixel Smartphones
On Wednesday, Google revealed its new range of Pixel smartphones, featuring slimmer cameras designed to enhance zoom capabilities and incorporate artificial intelligence tools aimed at simplifying user interactions.
This update seems to be a strategic move by Google to attract more consumers and broaden the user base for its AI functionalities.
“Google is emphasizing new software enhancements, especially those related to AI, as key reasons for consumers to consider upgrading,” said Andrew Cornwall, a senior analyst at Forrester.
He pointed out some notable additions, such as the ability to extract images from videos, a teleprompter feature, improved video stabilization, and upgraded speech-to-text capabilities.
While Pixel smartphones still trail behind Apple’s iPhone in popularity, Google is gradually boosting their market presence. The incorporation of AI features is set to roll out on Pixel devices in 2023.
In contrast, Apple appears to be falling behind, having announced new AI initiatives in June that utilize Google’s Gemini AI model to enhance daily living, with a strong focus on privacy and security.
In a press presentation last week, Google highlighted that the latest phones will come with double the storage, beginning at 256 gigabytes, offering 30 hours of battery life alongside faster wireless charging options.
The company has phased out the 128GB Pixel 11, previously its most affordable option priced at $800.
Starting Wednesday, U.S. buyers can pre-order the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, and Pixel 11 Pro XL at prices of $900, $1,100, and $1,300, respectively.
Additionally, the Pixel Pro Fold will be available, starting at $1,900.
This marks a $100 increase across the board compared to last year’s prices.
New functionalities include live translation capabilities for videos, podcasts, and audio messages.
The Pro model introduces a feature called HiLight, which allows users to assign colors to specific contacts. When a call comes in, the phone will light up in that color when placed face down.
This is meant to enhance the existing “Flip to Shh” feature that enables “do not disturb” mode when the phone is flipped over.
Additionally, Google is providing a complimentary six-month subscription to its AI Pro plan with purchases of the more premium Pixel 11 Pro or Pixel 11 Pro XL versions.
The goal is to draw more users into the AI Gemini toolkit, which is a response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Camera enhancements feature a new function known as Magic Capture, which allows users to take a series of photos and videos with just a single tap of the shutter button.
Google claims that the camera possesses improved light sensitivity, and for the Pro model, Instant Night Sight enables quicker low-light shooting—so you don’t have to wait long to capture images in dim environments.
For the first time, Google introduced a tracking device named Pixel Tag, available for $30 individually or $100 for a pack of four, compatible with devices running Android 9 or later.
