Young voters want changes on reproductive rights, health care and inflation, according to a new poll released Monday.
In partnership with Future Majority Research, Rolling Sea Action Fund, and ASPIRE PAC, Communities United Action Fund surveyed 2,257 voters under 40 in battleground states in Arizona, Michigan, Georgia, and California. carried out.
The Hill exclusively investigated the poll and found that 79% of respondents say MAGA extremists threaten democracy, including 80% of voters of color. I found out that A total of 76%, including 77% of voters of color, said MAGA extremists threaten their personal rights and freedoms.
Nickala Campbell Wallace, executive director of the Rolling Sea Action Fund, an organization dedicated to black political advancement, said the results showed young voters that their rights and freedoms were “under threat.” He said this is because he recognizes that.
“Radicals on the Supreme Court took away abortion rights, and radicals in Congress blocked meaningful action on gun safety and immigration,” Campbell-Wallace said. “Right now, they’re going after people seeking infertility treatment. Young people of color recognize the threats to their rights and freedoms, but they must be motivated to vote.”
The numbers were released just before Super Tuesday, and both President Biden and former President Trump appear poised to face off in November.
Both men are actively campaigning to build a coalition of diverse voters, particularly black voters.
Black voters often make up a large voting base for Democrats, but Republicans have been making inroads into this demographic in recent years.
a February vote A poll conducted in Michigan by the Howard University Public Opinion Initiative found that Trump’s higher approval ratings among black men than among black women could lead to Biden’s ouster.
But despite Biden’s declining support among Black voters, in December AP-NORC poll The survey found that only 25% of black Americans said they had a favorable view of President Trump.
Biden’s re-election campaign is now touting Trump’s recent comments about black voters as one of the reasons Trump and the Republican Party pose a threat.
With 81% of poll respondents now saying they disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the president’s campaign is also highlighting the threat Trump poses to reproductive freedom. .
Still, Democrats have acknowledged recently that they have struggled to get their message out to black and young voters.
Morgan Miller, executive director of Communities United, said now is the time to reach out to these voters, including those who are disillusioned with the democratic process.
“The environment on this issue is ripe for our diverse community to reach out and connect with these young voters,” Miller said. “Between now and November, we have a real opportunity to focus on these broadly popular policies and make clear how they will improve people’s lives if voted on in November. be.”
Monday’s poll also found that younger voters want to see improvements in the economy and their daily expenses.
Eighty percent of respondents said lowering health care costs and increasing insurance coverage are important goals for the United States to achieve.
Meanwhile, 78% said “continuing to strengthen the economy by controlling inflation, creating better-paying jobs, and ensuring a fair and inclusive economy” is an important goal.
69% said they would “increase access to affordable child care and guarantee paid families.”
“Vacation for parents of newborns” is important.
“We need to recognize that the pocketbook issue remains a tough one for the majority of voters, especially young people and people of color,” said Nick Jordan, executive director of ASPIRE PAC. “These voters say candidates need to have a comprehensive plan for the future. That’s why our leaders understand the daily challenges our communities face. We have to show that.”
