Jim Irsay’s Health Struggles and Controversial Treatment

Jim Irsay, the former owner of the Indianapolis Colts, passed away in May at the age of 65. Leading up to his death, Irsay reportedly faced recurring health issues and was under the care of a doctor who prescribed him opioids and ketamine.

Irsay had a long history of battling various health concerns, including addiction to drugs and alcohol. He had openly acknowledged going through rehabilitation “at least 15 times” and even established a foundation aimed at addressing mental illness and addiction. Just sixteen months before his death, it was announced that he was being treated for a “severe respiratory illness.”

There were claims that he experienced an overdose in December 2023. However, Irsay refuted these claims, attributing his condition to a serious hematoma in his leg. His unexpected death left many in the sports community shocked, as he was still seen attending Colts games during the 2024 season.

Reports surfaced indicating that he was “in the midst of a recurrence” regarding his substance use, with at least five witnesses stating they had seen him use opioids, while others reported witnessing him take ketamine. An eyewitness interviewed by the Washington Post expressed concern over Irsay’s treatment by Dr. Harry Harrowtunian, a California-based addiction specialist who had prescribed him opioids in the two years prior to his passing.

The doctor signed Irsay’s death certificate, and the investigation by the Beverly Hills Police Department concluded without evidence of overdose or drug abuse. As of now, no autopsy or toxicology results have been released.

During an interview with the Washington Post, General Counsel Dan Emerson defended the Colts’ approach to Irsay’s challenges, asserting they handled matters with professionalism and moral integrity. He expressed hope that Irsay could finally rest in peace.

A statement from the Colts described Irsay as a resilient figure, emphasizing his dedication not only as team owner but also as an advocate for mental health. The family recognized the public’s interest in his life but insisted on respecting privacy regarding sensitive health matters.

The family reflected on their father’s openness about his struggles with addiction and mental health, noting that he aimed to diminish stigma and support others facing similar issues. They emphasized their focus on celebrating his philanthropic efforts, loyalty, and passion for mental health advocacy.
