New Venezuelan gang ‘Anti-Tren’ may pose a serious violence threat, expert cautions

Emerging Gangs in Venezuela Raise Concerns

Experts are warning that new gangs forming in Venezuela might be more dangerous than existing ones like Tren de Aragua or Target America. Reports indicate that these groups, often referred to as “anti-Tren” gangs, primarily consist of former members of Tren de Aragua.

A recently unsealed federal complaint from April accuses 21 men in New York City of involvement in drug trafficking and prostitution. The indictment alleges that these anti-Tren members use a range of criminal activities, including violence, to assert their control over territories and power.

The indictment states: “We will maintain and protect the power and territory of anti-Tren and its members through conduct that includes threats of violence, including murder and assault, aimed at Tren de Aragua members and associates.”

A Texas incident highlighted the growing influence of such gangs. Reports suggest that illegal Venezuelan immigrants linked to gangs have been involved in armed robberies, exemplified by a case where a woman was attacked and pistol-whipped in her driveway in the Dallas area.

According to federal officials, the activities of anti-Tren members include smuggling and sex trafficking, contributing to their financial gains. Robert Charles, a former Secretary of State for International Drug Law Enforcement, stated that these emerging groups could surpass Tren de Aragua in violence.

Charles noted that these gangs might express their dominance in increasingly brutal ways, exploiting various regions to maximize profits with minimal risk. “In rural areas, where there’s little infrastructure, they can operate largely unchecked,” he explained, emphasizing the challenges law enforcement faces.

Authorities are becoming increasingly concerned. If allowed to flourish, these gangs could pose a significant threat. Charles believes the current numbers may be modest, but ignoring their potential for growth could lead to dire consequences. “It’s the nature of crime,” he asserted.

Recent reports indicate that anti-Tren gangs are expanding their presence beyond New York City. Notably, a violent robbery in Dallas in 2024 involved individuals connected to this gang. In this case, the victim was threatened, tied up, and robbed of valuables worth about $75,000.

Documents suggest that at least one suspect was directly affiliated with the anti-Tren gang. As law enforcement continues to investigate, the connection between these gangs and other criminal activities remains a pressing concern.
