Officer-Involved Shooting on D.C. Bus
Recently released footage captures a tragic incident where the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department shot and killed a murder suspect on an occupied bus on Tuesday morning.
The video, shared by independent journalist TheDMVLive, illustrates the moments leading up to the shooting. It starts with a man in a D.C. Metro safety vest communicating with law enforcement while sirens wail in the background. He appears to be confirming the presence of a man who matches the description of a murder suspect on the bus.
Shortly thereafter, an officer enters the bus, firearm drawn, and approaches the suspect, as several passengers begin to exit. The officer, moving closer, attempts to give instructions on compliance.
“Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!” the officer shouts, stepping back toward the front of the bus before firing multiple rounds at the suspect, who seems to be armed.
The suspect can be seen collapsing into his seat as the shots ring out.
At the time of the shooting, other passengers were still on board. Besides the suspect and the officer, another officer was stationed at the back of the bus and two individuals in safety vests were near the front. It appears more people were situated in the rear, including a passenger who was directly behind the suspect when the gunfire erupted.
The deceased suspect has been identified as 44-year-old Shawn Dewayne Williams, a D.C. resident linked to the murder of 44-year-old Melissa Wallace-Pulliam. Her body was discovered early Tuesday following reports of a shooting, as stated by the MPD.
Law enforcement had been informed that the suspect had last been seen boarding the Metro bus before they located him.
The MPD reports that officers only discharged their weapons after Williams displayed a handgun. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, and initial findings suggest the incident was related to domestic matters.
Wallace-Pulliam’s daughter shared with WUSA9 that her mother had recently left a long-standing abusive relationship. She mentioned that Wallace-Pulliam had just moved into a new apartment and was heading to her new job when tragedy struck.
“I never in my wildest dreams would think that my mother would get killed at a bus stop, just trying to move on with her life,” the daughter expressed. “She was on a new path, and she was happy where she was.”
According to MPD protocol, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
