New York City judge to rule on the case of dog duct-taped in park

Court Hearing for Dogs Taken from Abusive Owner

A judge in Queens may soon decide the fate of three dogs that were taken from a man accused of animal cruelty. The situation comes after Christopher Fife, allegedly filmed taping his dogs’ mouths and eyes shut with duct tape.

Fife, 38, was arrested in August after a witness reported seeing him wrap thick tape around a dog’s face in Gwen Illfill Park. Reports indicate that he had five dogs stuffed in a filthy box inside his van when authorities intervened.

Following the incident, one of the dogs was euthanized due to aggressive behavior, while another was surrendered to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), which found it a new home.

A hearing scheduled for Wednesday in Queens Criminal Court will address who will gain legal ownership of the other dogs now in ASPCA’s care.

However, rumors that authorities might return the animals to Fife have caused an outcry online. NYC Second Chance Rescue has called for a public hearing to oppose any plans to return a dog to him.

Jennifer Brooks, president of the organization, expressed confusion over why the ASPCA would consider letting Fife take any animals back, considering he was seen taping them in public.

Fife has pleaded not guilty, and legal proceedings are ongoing. Reports indicate that the remaining dogs are suffering from skin conditions.

Both the ASPCA and the Queens District Attorney’s office have clearly stated that they have no plans to return the animals to Fife. An ASPCA representative noted that it was collectively agreed that returning the dogs was not appropriate given the circumstances.

Queens Prosecutor Melinda Katz’s office reinforced this stance, asserting their commitment to preventing abuse by prosecuting the case aggressively. They believe these animals deserve to live peacefully, far from their alleged abuser, citing the severe neglect and abuse outlined in court documents.

Conditions for the animals were reported as dire, with signs of untreated injuries and inadequate living spaces. At this point, Fife’s attorney has not responded to requests for comment.
